The year 2008 in images and words
This year we had moonlight conditions during the Orionids, Leonids and Geminids .
A great mini expedition took place at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma (Spain). There we could stay at the Residencia for a week and observe the southern summer streams. It was the third time that I could observe from a professional observatory en use the infrastructure (accomodation, food and internet). I was there with Michel Vandeputte, Carl Johannink , Peter van Leuteren and Klaas Jobse. In total we saw nearly 6000 meteors.
The Perseid maximum night (12/13 August) was clear in the Netherlands. We witnessed an unexpected outburst of the Perseids that night. ZHR rose shortly to 135 (normally it is 80) and observed many bright Perseids. The highlight were two Perseids within ten minutes of magnitude
-5 and -10. The -10 Perseide had a long persistent train. French astronomer Jeremy Vaubaillon gave a possible explanation for this outburst. Maybe it was a strong distorted trail from comet 103P/Swift-Tuttle from the year 441.
The Orionids had their third outburst in a row. The height of the ZHR was the lowest of the three (ZHR 40 versus 60 in 2006 and 90 in 2007). The Leonids had again an outburst, but with a very low radiant in the Netherlands (and bad weather conditions) I saw just a handfull of Leonids..
Finally, I had a 3,5 hour clear sky during the Geminids. A beautiful show with some Geminids of -3.
