The year 2003 in images and words
2003: The Leonid storms are gone so what will you do as a meteor observer? In my case: going on... The year started well with unexpected clear spells during the night 3/4 January. So I could observe the Quadrantids for three hours. In the period from July 23 to August 3, I had my holiday with family at Ferma, a village on the south coast of Crete lying against some mountains. The advantage is that in August almost every day a strong northern wind blows from the mountains. Dry air descends and blows the haze that always hangs over the sea away. So I got a good view on activity of the southers summer streams SDA and CAP and the rising activity of the Perseids. I saw a possible outburst of the southern Delta Aquariids during the night 28/29 july 2003.
In the period from November 15 to 23 I was with Jaap van 't Leven and Peter Bus back at Moncarapacho in Portugal for the observation of some comets and meteors. Various dusttrails were expected near the earth with ZHR's up to 50-70. The weather was excellent with four clear nights in a row (16/17, 17/18, 18/19 and 19/20 november). The Leonids again showed increased activity with ZHR 's up to 35. For a report click here. On the evening of 20 november we withnessed a display of aurora from Portugal.....
