The year 2000 in images and words
Despite the bad weatherconditions in the Netherlands in 1999, it was a fairly successful year. We could observe two nights in early May from Biddinghuizen where we visually detected activity from a radiant of Comet 1983d/IRAS-Aracki-Alcock: the eta Lyrids. In 2008 the stream was also discovered in the video database of IMO and added to the IMO working list of meteor showers.
The planned Perseidcampaign from Biddinghuizen failed again due to bad weather. An evasive action on August 8, yielded a new observing site on the Ermelose heide where conditions are as good as in Biddinghuizen. I think now that the Ermelose Heide now is a better location due to future expansion of Lelystad Airport.
The Leonids in the Netherlands are not a succes. Only the night 16/17 november was clear. Together with Carl Johannink and Marco Langbroek I took a last minute flight to Faro, Portugal to escape the bad weather. This short campaign lasted only four day's and the results were great. There, at Almodovar, we could observe during both clear nights 16/17 and 17/18 november. The first night already gave elevated Leonid rates (ZHR 35 in stead of 15), the second night was awesome! We got to peaks of Leonid activity with ZHR's between 300 and 400. Even some very bright fireballs were seen, up to magnitude -8.
The increased activity of the Leonids on the night of 16/17 november 2000 was caused by the proximity of a dust trail of comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle from 1932 (1 revolution).
The high activity of the Leonids night 17/18 november 2000 was largely caused by the dust trail of comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle from 1733.
