The year 1998 in images and words
This year the Appel family moved to a new home and location. After a inspection on their new property we decided to move along with them. Unfortunately after that all planned observations at Biddinghuizen suffered from bad weatherconditions. During the Perseids we had only a handfull of partly clear skies....

Picture 5: Certificate of appreciation...

Highlight of the year was ofcourse the magnificent Sino Dutch Leonid Expedition 1998. We stayed in the period of November 12 to 20 at the Radio observatory Delingha. We were pretty proud that we as amateur astronomers in a professional observatory could stay and use the infra structure. It resulted in the observation of Leonid fireball rain on November 17, 1998. It was te strongest outburst caused by the filament structure of comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle.
That night I saw 99 Leonids from -3 to -12 ! Sometimes within seconds several fireballs, even once a very bright flash make the whole sky was lit up in a bluish color. Problably a -15 Leonid behind the mountains.
The next night we did not see a meteorstorm. There was some enhanced activity of weaker Leonids. It is not known to which dusttrail or structure this activity belongs. A full report can be found here and here you will also find lots of pictures of this expedition.
